Canon P & S digital camera

I was getting a new canon p&s (point and shoot) digital camera last weekend. This is as for a replacement to my damage (by my kids) pocket canon powershot A470is p&s digital camera. I bought canon powershot s95.

This is a very strong feeling that i missed alot of photo oppurtunity, because i do not have a camera handy with me most of the time since my A470is was damage earlier this year.

I do not want for others to use my S95 and ending up, i was buying 5 canon p&s digital camera. One each for my family, including 2 no canon powershot A495 for my 6 and 7 years old daughter and son. Canon Ixus 105 for my wife, canon powershot A590is for my other daughter and canon A2000is for the other boy.

I could have bought a new DSLR with the above buying spree. But now, i have all members of the family into photography. This is much more than getting a new DSLR.

I spent about one hour taking photoshot at my mum farm this morning.

I was not that very creative.... could not managed to get a good photo.

I was standing underneath this tall coconut tree. Must be about 10 meter height.
And i was thinking, it was a very risky to be standing underneath. But yet, i get use to it.

Taking a closer look, there are lots of coconuts which are old and at any time will just fell down. The brown in colour coconuts are old one.
If the coconut hits my head spot on, it can cause fatality or atleast a very serious head injury.

In building construction site, this area is a 'hard hat must be worn at all time'.

There were alot of mosquitoes. In that one hour, i must have smack closer to one hundred of them. I am confident of the number....

I took a closer photo of one of the mosquito, which is enjoying sucking my 'sweet' blood.... and what i really need is a macro lens....

Earlier today, i was thinking of entering a photo competition, but when i got the form, it was a big turn off. One of the clause says... ''Any photo submitted, the photohrapher will give the organiser the copyright".

This is not a photo competition!!!... but a ripped-off of photographer copyright.

Imagine, if i want a photograph of something... and the easiest way to get this, is to run a competition like above. With a small prize to give away... i could be ending up with a lot of photographs to choose from. The prizes might cost me less than hiring a professional photographer.

This practice is just like the mosquitoes.... sucking other people bloods out....

Trying firework shoot

I got these during the last weekend firework displays at Tutong Town.

The fireworks show lasted about 45 minutes.

I know how hard it is to get a good picture. I did shoot alot and only like two. None here though...

Shooting with my canon 40D. I found that the bulb control is not easy. I have not found the manual setting, the one canon have on canon 7D and 5D mark II, where i can control the bulb time manual by releasing the shutter release button. It is that easy on canon 7D and 5DMII.

On other hand, there might be possible with canon 40D, but the control buried inside the menu.... but thenagain i doubt it.

Getting the subject 'centre of focus' was hard. The above photo is having two cente of focus. I don't think it is good.

With no manual release control of the bulb time, it was hard to get the image shoot at the right time exposure. The above shows trails of lights. May be good and might not be good.

Getting the right composition is also difficult.

At this moment, i am still trying to get my picture publish....

It feels good and gratifying when your photo is accepted for publishing....
I felt it first time when one of my photo was selected and accepted by www.schmap.com back then in 2008, for my Mt Goo-Tcha Botonical Garden (Brisbane) shoot.

64th HM Birthday Coverage

I was trying a few things here. One, was trying to do the event photography. So as in photojournalism. Another, was trying to in-print my name on the pictures being published.

well both need so more work on it...

I use picasa to upload these images and put the option of watermark. I can't see the watermark. I will have to check this further when the upload is done.

There were so many things happenning at the one time. I need to have some kind of focus as what i want to capture.
For sure, i cannot cover the official event up-close, as i do not have the media pass.

Things happens so fast. A moment is all it take to capture that moment.

This boy came up to me wanting for his picture taken. A very courages young boy. Must be around four years old, from the look. I missed a second when i took the shoot. He was performing a solute for a very brief time.

Something was lagging of me. It took me awhile to be aware that he wanted his picture taken.

I need to understand the situation fast and take advantages of it.

Tried to create - "We are looking at something" image impression.

Helicopters' flight pass-by. Tried to create a mignificant view.

We have to note that different culture have different way of doing things.

This includes engagement customs or tradition... Though i have to say... it seem to me that traditions are evolving... There is always a new one.....

For a start of engagement, a ring, which seems to be across all cultures and some money, which is new. I beleive originally the ring comes with some valuable as a presents before strating the function. But now it is money.

This is also new to me. The ring being put by the mother of the future husband. If the mother had passed away, then it is by the eldest sister.

In contrast to some other culture, the ring is being put by the groom.

A day Trip to Miri

Went for a family (extended family) day trip to Miri yesterday.
This was my fisrt trip to Miri, Sarawak in ten years, i beleive. and my first using the Baram bridge since its was completed.

Spent sometime at Bekanu, Outskirt Miri City. Got myself a bargain of 'Durian Putih'.

I have noticed, Miri City has developed alot in the last decade. And the palces are getting busy (or may be just due to holiday time?).

However i am still wondering, why do we Bruneian go to Miri? Is it for shopping? Is it for holiday destination? or just a place to throw money in?

I heard people are taking about the congestion at the border control posts, traffic jams in Miri city, cars got stolen and some stuff are not really that cheap. I am still wondering..... why... and why.....

Took this last night, new year 2010.
I was almost at the end of the celebration, (fire works), i think about 15 mins into new year as i could not find my dslr.

This is an advantage living on a higher ground. I can see far ahead and the fireworks were specticular. All these fireworks were by private individual, i presume, judging from the display.

This is my walk around kits lens.

right now, i beleive it in KL, Malaysia canon service centre. Brunei's canon service centre could do anything about it, sothey send it to another entre.

The problem about this lens is "Error 01". I do not know how much it will cost me. For sure, it already cost me B$40.00 for the service so far...

Hope it won;t cost much, otherwise i have to think about it first... while this lens is good but i am getting better prime lens to cover the focal length of this lens, if the repair work is high.

My Hi fi is gathering dust

This is on one side on study room or more like my hi fi room.

It must be months ago the last time i listened to my hi fi. It is getting old. The Krell CD transport is having problem in "picking up" the CD. I was told, the laser need calibration or something need to be replaced. I have this krell since mid 1990s.

The epos 11 speaker was much longer with me. Again seldom use unless i am alone at home, otherwise i have to use my Grado or Sennheisser headphone. but i still prefer the speaker.

The latest edition was the tube headphone amplifier, which can use as pre-amplifier as well. So me Mc Cormmick pre-amp has to on the sideline.

I got these hi fi mostly during my bachelorhood, where understanbly i had less financial libility, less accountability except for myself and nobody to answer to except myself. Otherwise, how can i spend 5 figures on these hi fi.

Minor accident 20090912

I bumped into somebody car infront of me yesterday, which also cause the car to bumped another car infront of him.

It did happen at the Gadong-Tungku traffic light. It was turning green and i accelerated a bit (may be for one car length) then the the cars slowed down and i was just not in time to stop the car, eventhough i press the brake hard. My car momentum was just too much.

The front most car had small sretches and he just let thing go. The car in front of me, whom got sandwiched was only having scretches. Minor scretches. So minor that he just ask for my tel. no and for me to find a workshop for cost estimate/repair.

Mine is the worst. The front car was a four whell drive and the sapre tyre was at the back. This sapre tyre did the demage alot. My car bonnets bend upward and lucky the engine parts was not hit at all.

I will know the repair cost tommorrow when i will go the the workshop for repairs. There it goes my budget for the festival, happy eid day....

Bedanu waterfall

I read about this waterfall (wasai) in borneo bulleyin last saturday and on sunday did check out the area. For my ford transit van, it was an off road adventure but for those in the four wheel drive adventure, the road track was still considered a 'highway'.

I did not go to the actual waterfall whichi is about 10 minutes walk away fromthe parking lot. But it was good trip. And wrote our names in the visitor log book provided.

These are the new and old nokia communicators. The new one is better but i am missing the larger contact search feild of the old communicator. The old one can search from alot more feild, especially in the company name being included in the search.

This is usefull for me as i can search a person by the company name.

My nokia and mont blanc fountain pen

This pen is actually as a replacement for my limited edition agatha christe mont blanc fountain pen. It was lost by the mont blanc service agent in singapore, when i did send it for servicing. They claimed that it must have lost it during their office mivement (3 times).

They are very responsible and customer friendly. They had accepted resposiblity for the lost and not enforcing the time limit for due collection which if i am not mistaken 3 months. Mine was more than 3 years.

The branch i went to do not the limited edition fountain pen that i like. And my conscience also struck me. So i opted for this clasic design fountain pen which comes with the limited edition box. On top, few hundreds of which i paid shall be contributed to one of the united nation charitable body. If not mistaken unicef.

Also, i need to top up about $200.00. as this option is a bit more expensive than my original pen. I don't want to argue about it as i felt good already that they had accepted responsibility.

New washing machine

This was the box of my new washing machine. The kids mada a makeshift house before it got thrown away. The even had lunch in this makeshift house box. They did even assemble the chairs, just to have like garden chairs.

Now back to my washing machine. I had to buy the new one because the existing one need repairs. It is still new under warranty. But the problem is i can not find the warranty card. I called up the agent, the cost might be more than $100.00. It will be free, if i have the warranty card. I am still looking for the warranty card.

Well, this is the fifth washing machine i bought so far......

Trying sport photoshot

These was last weekend at my nephew birthday. They rented 'bouncer' and the kids played from 1400hrs till past 1800hrs non stop and allowed them to play again the next day, sunday, from 0700hrs till the bouncer was picked up the company about past 0900hrs. They have good time with their cousins.

I was trying to do sport photoshot. I took about close to 200 photoshot and only a few is good but not good enough in term of sharpness. It is already hard enough to get the composition about right.

I am not a person who like post processing, but these shot atleast need cropping to get better composition.

Trying out wildlife photoshot

This morning was seemingly cheerful with birds chipping hapily around my home. Decided to take photoshot with my 70-200mm 2,8L IS lens.

I soon found out that i could only gets around 20 feets aay from the birds before they flew away. And my lens was not able to capture closer image. I need lenger telephoto lens.

We had a discusion last friday at work about work processes for our new initiative. The question arised, should we follow the similar process or should we pushed the system and create new process?. Or in other word should we stay on the path or deviate and create our own path for others to follow?

Silver Jublee Arch in Bangar, Temburung

These were taken last week during another wor trip to Temburung/ This time, we were using land transportation except for one of us,whom has to use a boat ride because he did not have his pasport with him at the time.

Yes, we have to use passport as at the moment we have to cross border (Malaysia) in order to get to Temburung. Bruneian has to wait for the bridge linking Temburung to the main land Brunei. Howeber, polotically, Brunei is still claiming Limbang which separate Temburung and the rest of Brunei from Malaysia.

This is a long history beginning in the late nineteen century, which saw Brunei is losing Sarawak and Sabah (Now part of Malaysia now).

Anyhow back to the arch, i was involved in the design of this arch back in 1992 to commerrate 25th year the present Sultan accending the throne.

By the way i do not really know its official name, back then during construction, we call it silver jublee arch.

I spent, with my three other colleague for about ten saturday visiting this construction. The saturday were our weekend. The reason for this was, our involvement was suppose to be not related to our work and suppose to help out the Temburung District office.

The construction has good memory. Among them i got fine for parking my car incorrectly (which was argueable as to which parking line to fllow).

Kids sport day

These were taken last weekend, saturday, during my kids sport day. I was using 70-200mm 2.8L IS lens and without flash. The activities were all indoor. I took more than 300 shots that morning. And yes, shooting sport is not as easy as it seem...

Among all of the shot, i only like a few. Some are spoiled as all of sudden something was obstructing my subject matter. Anyhow, my canon 40D, did not disappoint me.

There were others as well with good DSLR and lens. May be, we parents should have a photoshot feild trip.

I took this picture a few hours earlier before sunset. I was trying to catch the water village picture from jalan Subok beside our Ministry of Foreign Affair and Trade.

This was taken on the way home (a bit of detour) from another fishing outing with my kids at Edinburgh jetty, jalan Kota Batu.

Nurul Iman Palace is at the background, Water Village is on the foreground.

It is said that Nurul Iman palace have two thousand rooms and i wonder is this will be equavalent to the number of rooms if all the water village houses in the picture added together.

Went Fishing at Kuala tutong

Even though, i am having flu but not H1N1. I took kids out for introducing them to fishing. We spend about 45 minutes fishing, or rather me teaching fishing. We did not catch anything, though my kids claimed to catcha crab. They fished the carb out of their pothole ther were making in the sand. It was like fishing on dry land rather than water. This is foul play.

For me, it was a re-fersher. It has been a very long time, i took my fishing gear out and they are stil in prime condition. I have to re-learn about making the knots.

Looking at my fishing gear, they cost me more than $500.00. But, it is worthed. My kind of fishing is not dependent on the quantity of fish being caught (which is very few) but the quality time being spend.

Day trip Work in Temburung, Brunei

Yesterday, Friday, i went to Temburung, Brunei for a day trip work in a team. I was a good trip for us (9 people altogether).

This was on the way to Temburong. We were using water transport. The speed boat took us about 35 minutes.

The waterways in Bangar which is the town in Temburong, where we got off was quite busy (so as the picture - busy no focus subject in particular). The town itself was quiter on Friday. It is already a quite town by itself.

The direction to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city of Brunei, where we started off earlier.

I spend my whole weekend plus workday friday at this golf club, Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club (RBGCC). I was part of the organising committee for the 15th.golf tournament of "Hari Perkhidmatan Awam" (Public Service Day).

The tournament was divided into three session and the prize ceremony was this afternoon. The morning session started at 0600hrs tee-off. I was thinking.... to play golf i have to wake-up at atleast 0430hrs in the very early morning. This is too early for me...

The crateristic of golfing.... very neat.....

It has been years since i have been thinking of playing golf... and i am really want to start golfing... atleast do some driving. A friend of mind has already loan his golf set as an incentive.

One of the thing about golf competition... the prices are luxurious.. especially the "hole in one". For this competition, among others, there are two cars for "hole in one". The above buggy car was not part of the prize but the car at the rear was.

I was trying to shoot the monkeys that were around my place. But my kids, somehow shoo them away. These monkeys were up to something. I can't blame them, probably my place is used to be their home... These monkeys were "displaced' by human living space development.

On the bright side... these plant has a better chance of living than the replanted one. I had one which to start with had countless of leaves on it and after two (may be three) years the leaves are countless (there is none left on the branches and the tree is dying (i am being kind here --- but probably is dead already)

I spent the mid morning till mid afternoon last sunday, jet washing my drain which might have contributed to me having the mc (medical leave) on the following day monday.

I took this picture last sunday morning. This "little" cobra about 1.2m lenght, i guess was crawling into muy lawn from my sister yard next door.

Here, we aare "allowed" to kill if it will do you harm, but i don't have the guts, eventhough i know it is a poisionous snake and will pose potential harm to my kids. At the end it slipped back to my siser lawn.. :-O ...oh...oh... I guessed the snake will probably crawled back to the bushes, and may be passing through somebody lawn... another...oh..oh...

This remind myself: In order to do something, you must have the guts to do it. However, doing nothing about something, you must also have the guts to face the consequences.... In other words... there is no in between....

I don't know what has happened, my earlier posting did not go through. So tired to re-write.

But i remember that the shot was all about the beautiful cloud i saw when i had my morning (almost afternoon) cofee break and i went upstairs to get my dslr but somehow it slip my mind as my laptop need attention (what's in the world, that this laptop had managed to veer my attention away). So i missed the beautiful cloud... but took the shot anyway... albeit not so beautiful....

This has reminded myself again that; an oppurtunity may only strike once...

I will be back to work tommorrow after a long break... and may be that why i am thinking about the cloud....

I should be relaxing but instead being adventerous to do "DIY" (Do It Yourself) my kid computer. The intention is good. I am trying to recover data from my old hard drives from my old computer (imac, pc and laptop).

But my god, i have messed it somehow and now the computer won't run. It says corrupted system configuration / missing file. A big hahaha... especially, if i am thinking of applying a "ICT Director" post at our Foreign Affairs and Trades Ministry. Yea... the advertisement is still open till this Thursday 08 April 09.

Now, back to my mess, i will be making a call to the PC vendor for software repair work tommorrow. A not so good thing especially, today i cannot find my pocket money again. The money sent missing. Not much but enough for our family one week chicken supply (counting as one bird per day).

Well, learning do cost something....

(p.s: i have just realised on the above picture, i am not a pepsi-cola guy. I am compelled to state this as my preference is always the other cola)... By the way: do i get money by stating this????

Dawn photoshot

I am trying to capture the dawn atmosphere, on my morning outside my house. The shot was taken on last monday 30 Mac 09.

I am still learning to take the shot, but the problem i am having at the moment, is seeing them on my laptop LCD screen. I need to know exactly at what angle i should be seeing, as different angle will give me different colour contrast. I need a better screen, so as i can really appreciate my photoshot.

Found this old picture from my first ever digital camera, Nikon E995. This picture was taken in 2006. It was a good consumer camera. One of the good thing, about this camera is that i can twist the lens 180 degrees. It was easy for taking picture of yourself by yourself.

I have been busy with computer these days, like installing my old hard drive to PC as additional and re-organising my laptop connections to its peripehals ( now, i only have to connect one USB port for all the printers, scanner, external keyboard and mouse, handphone connection, usb cooling fan, external hard drive).

On top, i am also busy with spring cleaning my study room. Untidy as ever.

My old try out with D100, D70 and 350D

I came acroos my old try out with dslr back in late 2004. I really wanted to get dslr back then but could not managed because the budget for dslr went to some other pressing needs. It took me till April 2007 to get dslr canon 40D, which was again not really my first choice. My first choice was Olympus E3. But my budget is only good for 40D.

These model were my choices last time: Nikon D100 (second hand), Nikon D70 and Canon 350D. The sample shot i took were as follows:

Olympus was not in the list. If the circumtances had allowed last time, i will be getting Canon 350D. This decision was more due to budget constraint and possibility for vertical grip. But i liked the D70 but way out of my budget and no vertical grip was a turn off last time. Hence, i was considering D100, but was costing me alot as well and way out my budget.

But now, i do not really need the vertical grip for the grip or additional battery supply. Weight is now becoming a factor in my needs of dslr.

I took this picture yesterday afternoon. I was learning the 40D setting. I am still compitilating about getting a four third system. may be it is a good idea to get the smaller Oly like E420 to replace my pocket camera canon 570is.

First rule in photography, you must have a camera handy to capture the images.

My canon 570is is good but AA battery is getting troublesome. Somehow i have lost alot of it and now i am holding to the fast charging (15 minutes fully charge) AA batery. The battery is good but somehow playing around with the power supply. Sometime, i have to switch my canon 570is on/off one or two time. Otherwise, my canon says, please replace battery. I do not know what was wrong and presume it was the battery. But, minor details.

This is an old check point. The new one is just around the corner.

At this point, i am thinking about my old question about four third system. I like the the 4:3 aspect ratio more than 3:2 aspect ratio. I should have pushed myself of getting Olympus E3 last time.And what is more, i like the 6R (6x8) printing rather than 8x12. Cost wise, it is BND$1.00 vs BND$2.50. Even the regular 8R (8x10) should be ok for 4:3 aspect ratio. I do not like cropping. If there was Olympus E30 last time, i will be Oly guy instead of Canon guy.

Actually, i have been using 4;3 aspect ratio with my canon 570is. And the photo looks like having a good perspective. But the important thing is i like it.

Today, i was venturing out to Lumapas area and some areas are my first..... Brunei is not a small country to think about it. This remind me about a decade ago where a foreigner could tell me more about Brunei land area... He had been around to places in Brunei that till to this day i have not visited all the places he did mention and visit.

And i call myself a Bruneian .. heh.... It is good that our Brunei Tourism is promoting itself through "KNK" (Kenali Negara Kitani) or in my english translation " Knowing our own country"....

I say there were four category of them; photoshot with camera phone, consumer camera, dslsr user and a bit serious dslr user...

I say, i am yet to be a serious photographer.... like this morning one guy did more serious photographing... he did not mind the hassle and difficulty in getting the shot... well not that serious enough to get into the water or lay down on the grass (there must be another category for this)

For me at the moment.... hassle free photographing unless i feel it really worth going all the way, down to earth shot... or somebody pay me $10K for a photoshot....

However may be i will be doing it in the future...

Canon - Made in Japan

Today, i was at the exhibition in conjunction to RTB award 2008. Canon was there, and i got the change to play around with canon 5D mk II. They put the 1000D, 450D, 50D and 5DmkII side by side. Interestingly i can see the differences between them. Physically, there is almost no difference ( i say) between the 50D and 5DmkII.

The control on 5DmkII seem familiar. I felt accustom to it, and just like Canon 40D, which is following the 5D. The kit lens 24-125mm f4 L is good for a walk around lens. I think i will give this lens a miss and just get the body. Its cheaper. But the lens is good.

At the exhibition, they offer 5DmkII for $3,900.00 or $5,700.00 with the kits lens. Normally, the body cost $4.900.00 here in Brunei. It is expensive. It cost much less in Australia.

After trying out, the 5DmkII for a while, i felt that the ISO control is big advantage. I have issues on ISO with my 40D. It seem the ISO is not good enough on my 40D. Yes, 5DmkII may produce a better image quality, but more than that i wonder whether spending that money on 5DmkII would be worthed. And yes i like to have 5DmkII.

It has been a very long time since my last post..... and a lot thing has happen...like new year !!!! 2009....

I have time on my side this hours as waiting / taking care of my son who has just have a minor operation.. something...bioxy bla..bla..bla... i don't really get the medical procedure name of the operation. And he is still recovering from the general aneasthetic... that is he is still asleep...

I can use this time to catch up thing and checking out or more like deleting my emails....

This night shot from my canon 570is is not bad. A self judgement and i can't say anything about bias... a self judgement really rarely being said without any bias.... i think intentionally or not there is an element of bias... try not to be prejudice and the chances are that you are being prejudice...

Ones opinion are being formed through your own perspective and it is good to hear out what other people are saying and formed your own conclusion. Yup... some people talk rubbish and it is up to the listener to filter it out.... hmmm... a probable prejudice here....

Sometimes, it takes time to see what other people are seeing. And for time being, you wonder why these people are seeing differently from you... hmmm... another probable prejudice here...

I had one. For a very long time at workplace, as far as i remember, more than ten years, i am not favouring for customer to have his/her initials on our work order (site work order). I had arguements and i firmly put my foot down, until last month. And this is after an explainantion from a third party, whom have no interest aside from improvement on our work process.

And finally, i can see the good perspective from one of the other sides, and yes , there are many perspectives on this matter depending where you stand. hmmm... another probable prejudice...

These days, i find it hard to find time.... it seem it go by so fast.... racing through passing by me and i hardly ever notice it... I am sure this has nothing to do with age.

It has to do to with present day life style...everything on the move... The rule of the game is either you keep track or falls behind and even better if you stay up front....

Last week, i did try wedding photograph, and it is quite a bit of hectic. And a good experience. It was my niece wedding. First lesson of becoming a wedding photographer. But i need an external flash.

Well i am doing this update in RIPAS hospital. They have a free wireless internet connection. My boy is in hospital pending a minor surgery tommorrow. So here i am staying/waiting up and doing the re-write of my thesis as commented by my supervisor. Doing surfing in between.

I have been busy this past week....

Actually, i am getting tired with my thesis write up. Out of eight subject; i have 1 being graded higher distinction, 4 with distinction.... i guess a just pass on my thesis will do... but it will drag my GPA down to just pass as thesis is weighted 1/3 of the whole course.... a credit on my thesis will just do fine.... i want to get a distinction.... and i need to do a bit of research to answer my supervisor comments.... hmmm a bit tiring....

i have just checked out the exchange rate for australian dollar to singapore dollar, it is almost on par. hmmm.... i am losing money here..... i am juat about to revert back my australian dollar to singapore dollar. It was about 1.3 singap[ore to 1 australian dollar....

Just imagine the loses since february 2007. Back then my monthly scholarship allowance was the peak due to exchange rate at just under aud$5,800,then drop steadily to under aud$5,200 starting june 2007 untill this year june 2008. Now according to the exchange rate, i should be receiving around aud$6,700. A whooping $1,500 increase. Thats means, my loses due to exchange rate is a whopping.... around aud$21,000.00. Surely olympus E3 was no problem.....

Well can't complaint.

Like my picture above, as good as it get from my canon570is. A night shot and the camera was place on the table, without proper vibration precautions. And still not bad....

Nothing Much

These past few weeks there is nothing much happening, except going to medical doctors. My kids had chicken pox, asthma, cough, fracture ankle... basically, all five of them were going medical treatment some sort or thee other....

Tommorrow, wednesday, one of my boy will be under going pre-operation medical check. On Thursday, i will have hearing test and so as my daughter. Then on Saturday, my daughter (the fracture ankle) will be going for medical review...

Fun day for the family.....
